Being a sort of audiophile , I bemoan the direction things have gone . The irony, is that though computer music is dominated by mp3s , the opportunity for better sound is great . With 24 bit etc. you can go beyond CD . If they ever get this standardized , a "files" based system has some advantages over standard playback devices ( CD, LP, SACD, DVDA etc.) , one being no moving parts !
This one area where classical music nuts, and Deadhead tapers meet !
... And vinyl still laughs at all this . Don't have a phono stage in my pre-amp, and the hassle of the record thing, is of-putting . But, those primitive black thing still have something that cd, and God forbid mp3 , doesn't have .

I have some irreplaceable stuff in the vinyl collection (analog) that I'd love to move into digital... wish there was an easy way, but it's time consuming and problematic.

The good news is that you can get some impressive results doing your own transfers from your records to digital . It is a bit of a pain , compared to regular digital transfers ( we are so spoiled ) , but it can be done with a stand alone cd recorder , or now devices that allow you to convert you analog signal straight into your computer , as 16, or 24 bit . This old news to some here . I'm sure .
